A HIGH street giant branded a "great place for Christmas shopping" condemns another shop for permanent closure.<\/p>\n
Argos\u00a0will close its standalone store at the Overgate in Dundee city centre.<\/p>\n

The store, located on the upper floor of the shopping centre, will shut for good in March 2024.<\/p>\n
An Argos spokesman confirmed the news, describing it was a "difficult decision".<\/p>\n
They told The Courier: "We are currently talking to our colleagues in our Dundee Overgate Argos store, which we have made the difficult decision to close.<\/p>\n
"We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected.<\/p>\n
"We are supporting them in every way we can, including exploring opportunities for colleagues to redeploy within Argos and Sainsbury's."<\/p>\n Reacting to the news on Facebook, one shopper said: "It's in an inconvenient location.<\/p>\n "It's much easier to get bulky items delivered or go to Sainsbury's where you can park near the shop.<\/p>\n Another said: "Never anyone in the place these days. Still a shame though."<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Earlier this year the retailer announced plans to close 100 stores within 12 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sainsbury\u2019s\u00a0who own Argos, has said the move is part of plans to expand Argos\u2019 presence in supermarkets.\u00a0<\/p>\n It has already shut more than\u00a045 branches in the last 12 months\u00a0and opened up over 25 branches inside Sainsbury's stores.<\/p>\n By March 2024, Sainsbury's expects to have 160 standalone stores and between 430 and 460 Argos counters inside Sainsbury's supermarkets.<\/p>\n Argos\u00a0closed its standalone store at the Roaring Meg retail park in Stevenage in November.<\/p>\n The Riverside Argos store in\u00a0Norwich\u00a0shut in August.<\/p>\n A new branch will open in Queens Road Sainsbury's.<\/p>\n Locations in Newport and Cardiff Bay in\u00a0Wales\u00a0also\u00a0shut up shop\u00a0later this year.<\/p>\n Argos closed its store in St Stephen's shopping centre in\u00a0Hull\u00a0on August 8.<\/p>\n A new branch in Sainsbury's Hessle opened the following day on August 9.<\/p>\n The\u00a0homeware chain\u00a0relocated its Grimsby Alexandria store on August 9 and 10.<\/p>\n The Scunthorpe Argos also relocated on August 15 and 16.<\/p>\n And the Parc Plaza branch in Bridgend also closed its doors in recent weeks.<\/p>\n The retailer has also shut standalone stores in the following locations:<\/p>\n It also closed all of its 34 stores in the\u00a0Republic of Ireland\u00a0on June 24.<\/p>\n The full list of stores that closed down in Ireland are:<\/p>\n The company blamed the\u00a0closure of the Republic of Ireland stores\u00a0on the investment required to develop and modernise the Irish part of its business as "not viable".<\/p>\n The\u00a0cost of living\u00a0crisis, stubbornly high\u00a0inflation\u00a0and\u00a0energy\u00a0costs are taking their toll on retailers.<\/p>\n Shoppers have been cutting back spending, while the cost of actually running a store has also increased, meaning some outlets have struggled to keep going.<\/p>\n Figures from the\u00a0British Retail Consortium\u00a0(BRC) this\u00a0summer\u00a0found the UK had lost 6,000 stores over a five-year period.<\/p>\n Several major brands have also collapsed and closed stores for good.<\/p>\n Wilko's fall in August marked the biggest British\u00a0retail\u00a0collapse since\u00a0McColl's plunged into administration in May last year.<\/p>\n Paperchase collapsed into administration\u00a0at the end of January this year and all 106 stores\u00a0closed for good.<\/p>\n Scottish clothing brand\u00a0M&Co\u00a0and wellies retailer\u00a0Joules\u00a0were among a host of other familiar brands that went bust in 2022.<\/p>\n But shoppers still have reason to be cheerful as other retailers are actually expanding this year.<\/p>\n The Sun recently revealed\u00a0discount retailer Costco\u00a0is expanding in the UK and is planning to open 14 more warehouses over the\u00a0next\u00a0two years.<\/p>\n Bonmarche is opening\u00a0at least seven new stores after filing for administration in 2019, while The White Company is due to open new stores in October and November.<\/p>\n Once-huge bakery chain\u00a0Patisserie Valerie, which also collapsed into administration and closed most of its stores, has started reopening branches, as revealed by the Sun.<\/p>\n Wilko shops have already\u00a0started returning to the UK high street\u00a0after the chain collapsed earlier this year.<\/p>\n We also recently revealed bakeries Wenzels, Greggs,\u00a0Dunkin'\u00a0Donuts and The\u00a0Cornish Bakery\u00a0are all in the process of expanding in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/picture>PAY DAY <\/span><\/p>\n
