Argentina gathering allies for Falklands support as they turn to former colony
Argentina’s latest ploy to wrest the Falkland Islands away from British sovereignty has been revealed.
Buenos Aires is cosying up to New Delhi in a bid to revive India’s support for decolonisation as the South American country ramps up its bid to snatch the South Atlantic archipelago from British sovereignty.
Argentina is pushing the Asian giant into supporting negotiations over the disputed territory which is administered by the UK. A group made up of political representatives, diplomats and parliamentarians from India met on Thursday (December 7), according to reports.
In shocking remarks translated by Express.co.uk from Argentine daily Infobae, Indian opposition MP and intellectual Shashi Tharoor is quoted as saying the Malvinas “should go back to Argentina or at least there should be constructive discussions to come to that final conclusion”.
Argentines and supporters of the South American country’s claim use the term Las Malvinas to describe the Falklands.

A former British colony itself, India was the first country to chair the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation.
Shazia Ilmi, national spokesperson for India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, told Spanish international news agency EFE that India has given its backing for the start of talks over the Falklands’ future.
Hugo Javier Gobbi, Argentina’s ambassador to India told EFE the group will maintain awareness of the Falklands issue and show his country’s gratitude to India “for always supporting Argentina on this issue”.
Meanwhile, at a graduation ceremony for Argentinian Armed Forces officers, the country’s Minister of Defence Jorge Taiana said Buenos Aires continues to use diplomatic channels to repeat its claim that the “occupation” by the United Kingdom is “illegal and illegitimate”.

The talk comes after right wing populist Javier Milei swept to victory in Argentina’s presidential elections in November, in part by boasting he would wrest the Falkland Islands from Britain.
Mr Milei, who professes to be an admirer of Margaret Thatcher, said he would look into ways of settling Argentina’s claim to the islands, which his country invaded in 1982, sparking a war with Britain.
He told La Nacion: “What we are proposing is to move towards a solution like the one England had with China over the Hong Kong issue and that in this context the position of the people who live on the islands cannot be ignored.
“You cannot deny that those people are there. You cannot disregard those human beings.”
The president-elect said his country will negotiate with the UK and take account of the views of the Falkland Islanders, stressing the need for a diplomatic solution.
