Doing a Hancock? Ex-Speaker John Bercow will appear on reality show The Traitors – along with stars of Love Island, Big Brother and Real Housewives

  • Former House of Commons Speaker will appear alongside Love Island’s Ekin-Su
  • Follows in the steps of Matt Hancock by making leap from politics to reality TV

Former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, who was labelled a ‘serial bully’ by an independent inquiry, has been picked up as a contestant on series two of the US version of The Traitors.

The 60-year-old ex-MP follows in the steps of Matt Hancock by making the leap from politics to reality TV as a contestant on the show, which is hosted by Alan Cumming.

Mr Hancock, who is still MP for West Suffolk, appeared on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here in 2022 and is shortly set to appear in the celebrity version of SAS: Who Dares Wins on Channel 4.

But the appearance could be awkward for former Buckingham MP Mr Bercow, who was banned from holding a parliamentary pass after an investigation found that he ‘repeatedly and extensively’ bullied staff in the Commons.

He is set to appear alongside a variety of other UK and US celebrities in a line-up that also features Ekin-Su Culculoglu, from Love Island, Ru Paul’s Drag Race drag queen Peppermint and American Big Brother contestant Dan Gheesling.

Alan Cumming returns as the host for the second series of the American show where they compete for a fund of up to $250,000

The US version of the show is different from the UK’s in that it features an all-star cast. Its first series saw a number of reality TV stars and ordinary people competing for a huge cash prize – $250,000 as of series two.

But just like the UK version the American show is filmed at Ardross Castle north of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

The British edition is hosted by Claudia Winkleman and has also been renewed for a second series.

Alan Cumming returns as the host for the second series, and this time will be joined by his dog Lala as a presenting sidekick.

The actor, 58, adopted the Costa Rican pup in New York more than seven years ago after a vet took her off the street because she was pregnant. He also has a rat terrier chihuahua cross called Jerry.

The show will feature 21 celebrity contestants – including boxer Deontay Wilder and stars from shows including Real Housewives and Dancing With the Stars.

They will be competing for a fund of up to $250,000 – which the Faithfuls and Traitors will have to build up through a series of challenges.

Matt Hancock made headlines last year when he went into the jungle to star in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

During his jungle stint, he served as Camp Leader and was voted to do six consecutive trials by the public, including a gruesome eating trial alongside Boy George

The former health secretary was beaten only by Jill Scott and Owen Warner to first and second place respectively, with the Lioness being crowned as the Queen of the Jungle.

The news of his role in the show drew a rapid rebuke from Number 10, with Rishi Sunak’s spokesman saying the Prime Minister believes MPs should be ‘working hard for their constituents’ at a ‘challenging time for the country’.

Chief Whip Simon Hart announced he had removed the whip from Mr Hancock – the same fate that befell fellow Tory MP Nadine Dorries when she went on the ITV show in 2012.
