Bans on XL bullies could lead to the massive beasts “roaming the streets,” a London-based dog charity has warned.
Ira Moss, of All Dogs Matter has warned that banning the XL bully in the UK would not in the short term do enough to stop the current surge in adult dogs no longer wanted by owners.
She and her colleagues have been on the front line, having previously informed the Daily Star that they receive up to 20 calls a day from people desparate to get rid of their bullies.

She told The Star: “It's all very well banning them – which I actually do agree with – but what is it going to happen to all these dogs?
“I mean, we're now besieged with calls and people wanting to give up their XL bully, and I'm sure the other charities are too, but there's nowhere for them to go.
“So it's all very well, you know, bringing in all these new rules but unless it's followed up with anything, the dogs will just be roaming, literally roaming the streets.”
While much of the conversation surrounding the breed has centered around banning breeding, rather than the dogs that already exist, Ira thinks this will still perpetuate issues surrounding what to do with the dogs.
“What if the people who have got them don't want them anymore?”
Ira explained that her outfit had had some XL bullies come to them that were “lovely” but this is not a blanket rule, and as such what to do with unwanted specimens remains a problem.
She said: “Of course, there's going to be a percentage of people that are okay.
“But a large percentage of them are going to be irresponsible because why would someone responsible want to buy 70-kilo dogs and keep them in a flat in East London,” a part of the capital where her charity operates.
“You know you Why would you? You know, it's like buying a Ferrari for your first car when you’re on minimum wage, it’s a bit silly.
“So sadly, there's nowhere for these dogs to go. If they were going to get surrendered [you might need] a mass cull and they won't be a mass cull because everyone will be up in arms about it.”
