Elon Musk has confirmed the first human Neuralink chip will be trialled, with a test subject set to receive the controversial chip.

The Tesla and Twitter CEO confirmed the next phase of study on the Neuralink chips in a post to X, with the aim to "restore full body movement". The SpaceX CEO questioned what would happen if "Stephen Hawking had this."

A full statement from both Neuralink and Elon Musk was posted to X, formerly Twitter, and they hope to improve the link between "human and AI bandwith". He added the "Luke Skywalker" solution "can become real" and referenced Star Wars in a later tweet.

Musk's tweet racked up tens of thousands of likes just 20 minutes after being posted, with thousands pouring in to witness the tech innovation. Neuralink hopes to use the technology in aiding those with spinal cord injuries.

A statement from Musk read: "The first human patient will soon receive a Neuralink device. This ultimately has the potential to restore full body movement. In the long term, Neuralink hopes to play a role in AI risk civilizational risk reduction by improving human to AI (and human to human) bandwidth by several orders of magnitude. Imagine if Stephen Hawking had had this."

Further words from a Neuralink statement confirmed the breakthrough and subsequent plans for human testing. They are now requesting individuals for a trial, and listed it as the PRIME study.

Their statement read: "We’re excited to announce that recruitment is open for our first-in-human clinical trial! If you have quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), you may qualify. Learn more about our trial by visiting our recent blog post."

Neuralink studies into the chip will be carried out under the PRIME investigation, (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface). A surgical addition will be made to place the chip in the test subject.

Further documentation of those in the study will follow, with investigations into the impact on brain activity and control movement nerves to be closely followed.

The additional information, providing a brochure for potentially interested candidates, added: "The PRIME Study is being conducted under the investigational device exemption (IDE) awarded by the FDA in May 2023 and represents an important step in our mission to create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs."
