The Spanish monarchy is in tumult after its Queen was accused of having an affair with a man who went on to marry her own sister.
The bombshell claims against married Queen Letizia first emerged last month in the book Letizia & I: What Secrets is Queen Letizia hiding? penned by journalist Jaime Penafiel. The allegations have now been echoed by Penafiel's main source, Jaime del Burgo – Queen Letizia's alleged former lover.
In a series of posts to X (formerly Twitter), del Burgo shared his version of events. The pair reportedly had an affair for 18 months, six years into Letizia's marriage to King Felipe VI of Bourbon – who will celebrate two decades together next year. But their romantic relations actually began years prior, according to del Burgo.

The pair were said to be in a "loving relationship" from 2002 to 2004, when Letizia's career as a TV journalist was taking off. The pair would meet at swanky hotels such as the Santo Mauro hotel in Madrid where David Beckham stayed while he was signed with Real Madrid.
They also went on a number of lavish holidays together to Barcelona and Venice. The relationship was so serious del Burgo wanted to propose to his girlfriend.
But there was a spanner in the works. By that point Felipe had seen Letizia on the news and had a dinner party arranged just so he could meet "the girl he had fallen in love with."

So as del Burgo prepared to pop the question at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, Letizia stopped him and revealed she had met someone else, who she identified only as a "diplomat."
Her partner immediately retorted: "You're with Felipe of Bourbon." Letizia didn't deny the romance and the pair agreed to maintain a lifelong friendship.
But days before the pair tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Almudena Cathedral, attended by the likes of then-Prince Charles, Del Burgo claims Letizia admitted she was still in love with him and urged him to "never leave her." She even queried why he'd never proposed to her, to which he couldn't bring himself to respond.
Despite the emotional confession, the pair remained firm friends between 2004 and 2010, Del Burgo continued. Six years after she married the King, however, the former flames allegedly rekindled their romance.
He said of a reported intimate moment in July 2010: "Lying in the same hammock, under the pool porch, facing each other, [Letizia] told me 'I love you'. And I replied, 'I love you'.
"That same night our love relationship continued, interrupted years before, because love was always there since our first trip to Venice in 2002."
For the next year and a half the pair continued their affair, according to Del Burgo. He claimed they took trips abroad and at one point Letizia allegedly considered divorcing King Felipe in favour of her extramarital lover.
The couple were even considering buying a house together, the scorned Del Burgo claims. However, he said Letizia called off the affair in 2012 after 18 months, fearing the news might get out.
Del Burgo ended up marrying Letizia's sister, Telma Ortiz, that same year. Of course, he and his former lover couldn't help but cross paths at his wedding.
He is quoted in the book saying: "When the guests congratulated us, Letizia's turn came and, kissing me on the cheek, she whispered into my ear, 'We'll be together again'."
