At least six people have died in a fire at a nightclub complex early this morning in the south eastern Spanish city of Murcia, according to reports.

The main fire broke out at Teatre nightclub, located in the Atalayas area, around 06:00 local time, and local media reported that the venues, Golden and Fonda venues were also affected after the flames spread.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown and witnesses said that there are at least eight people with whom they have not been able to contact since the fire started, as authorities warn the death toll could rise.

La Verdad reported that the missing people belong to the same group that was celebrating a birthday in the upper area of the Fonda nightclub when the fire started.

Firefighters are currently working to try to access the area where family and friends indicated they were when the fire started, but is proving difficult to access due to structural, reports said.

As well as the six dead, four people suffered smoke inhalation, two of which were hospitalised.

The injured are two women and two men, between 22 and 45-years-old.

About 40 firefighters in 12 vehicles tackled the flames. Members of the Homicide Group of the Murcia Police Headquarters joined in to investigate the origin of the fire.

The City Council has opened the Murcia Sports Palace to care for the families of the fatal victims and the missing.

A team of psychologists, social workers, ten Civil Protection workers and two Local Police officers are on hand, and a special room has been set up for the most serious cases that require psychological attention.
