Warning to Brits as holiday spot to be hit by sudden storm called ‘Cold Drop’

Britons and locals on the island of Majorca can expect heavy raom to batter the island as a yellow weather alert has been issued, forecasting stormy weather over the next few days.

The Palma Met Office (AEMET) issued the warning on its social media, and the island has been on a bad weather alert since last Sunday when a freak storm caused havoc across the Balaerics.

Heavy rains are normal for this time of year, where the weather phenomenon is known as Cold Drop or “Gota Fria” in Spanish.

In the past, this has resulted in flooding and beaches being closed, as autumn arives on the Spanish island.

Many resorts are still cleaning up debris from the storm which battered the region at the weekend.

One weather-related incident saw the Britannia P&O cruise ship crash into an oil tanker during gale force winds.

A P&O spokesperson said: “On Sunday, August 27, P&O Cruises Britannia was involved in a weather-related incident while alongside in Palma de Majorca. A small number of individuals sustained minor injuries and are being cared for by the onboard medical centre.”

The Met Office shared a tweet showing the destruction caused by the “heavy rain and strong gusty winds” over the Balearic Islands.

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, the storm has caused 84-related accidents so far.

WX weather charts also predict stormy weather over the island towards the end of the week and the upcoming weekend.

After a very dry and hot summer, the rain will be a welcome sight for some but there are fears within the tourist industry that the unsettled weather will hit the holiday industry and could even hit last-minute bookings.
