Wrestling fans are salivating over a potential dream match between CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 40.
After Punk made his sensational return to the WWE at Survivor Series last week, the company’s officials are “optimistic” a fight can happen. According to Fightful Select, WWE sources have revealed that the controversial wrestler has had discussions about the potential of fighting Stone Cold, without the final decision being known.
This isn’t the first time the two icons have nearly stepped into the squared circle together, with fans regularly disappointed over years due to near-agreements falling through.

Sports Illustrated have reported that the WWE plan for Punk to feud with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, two of the federation’s top stars, before then sharing the ring with Stone Cold. Due to Rollins’ angry reaction to Punk’s comeback on Saturday, it is thought that he would be the first feud, with reports they could square off at 2024’s Royal Rumble event.
The spine-tingling return of one wrestling’s recognisable faces made waves last week, helping the WWE smash its social media record for its Survivor Series event by garnering over 71 million views across all platforms.

Punk left the WWE back in 2014, citing creative frustrations and annoyance towards his medical care at the time. The three-time world heavyweight champion has had a rocky relationship with the federation over the years, reportedly receiving his termination papers on the day of his wedding.
It appears the WWE has adopted some new measures to try and avoid this new partnership ending in similar acrimony, with Punk’s latest deal reportedly including a behaviour clause. According to the Daily Mail, this unconfirmed clause allows the WWE to terminate the deal should the disruptive Punk act out.
