A teenager has confessed to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent after stabbing a maths teacher, plunging a UK school into lockdown.

Appearing at Bristol Magistrates' Court, the 15-year-old – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Jamie Sansom in at Tewkesbury Academy in Gloucestershire on on July 10 of this year.

The attack saw the secondary school locked down as Sansom was rushed to hospital.

Gloucestershire Police were called to the incident at around 9.10am where they arrested the teen assailant.

In a statement at the time, headteacher Kathleen McGillycuddy said: "We appreciate that this morning has been a worrying time for all associated with Tewkesbury Academy. We are writing to reassure you that all pupils remain safe and well.

"We were alerted shortly before 9am this morning to reports of a serious incident which left a male member of staff in need of hospital treatment. The school was locked down and police were called immediately when we became aware of this incident."

Local MP Laurence Robertson added: "I’m deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the terrible incident at Tewkesbury School this morning.

"My thoughts are with everyone at the scene. And my thanks to the staff, police, Dobbies [garden centre] and everyone trying to deal with the situation."

Shortly following the incident, Mr Sansom, 27, said he hoped to make a full recovery from the single stab wound inflicted on him.

"I am pleased to say that I am recovering well," he said previously.

"My thanks to everyone who helped put me on the road to what is expected to be a full recovery.

"I have received more than one hundred messages of support, which has been a big boost. It was hugely uplifting."

The defendant previously admitted possessing a bladed article following the attack.

He was remanded in custody where he will remain until a sentencing hearing, which has now been scheduled for September 28 at Cheltenham Youth Court.
